2010 June 17....28. Bird trap...or squirrel trap?

The doves in Texas are big & smart! Every time I fill the bird feeder, they sit on top of it and flap their wings really hard so that they can shake all the seeds out of it! I will fill it, and by the end of the day it will all be gone! Chuck, being the MacGyver that he is, said that he could come up with a trap to catch those greedy doves!

So, Chuck and Austin headed into the garage and came out with a whole bunch of different items...tent poles, casting net, rope, and duct tape. It looked like a bunch of junk to me, but within a few hours the boys had a homemade bird trap.

The trap hung over and around the bird feeder, when there were a significant amount of doves underneath eating, Chuck or Austin would pull the rope and the trap would fall on the doves enclosing them in the casting net! Brilliant...dove nuggets for dinner!

One evening, there were about eight doves under the feeder and Chuck had the line rigged up to a pin on the hammock. All he had to do was quietly get out the door, and pull the stick out. Unfortunately, when Chuck pulled out the stick the net didn't fall. So the trap stayed up for weeks and Chuck would make some alterations on the trigger mechanism. But even with the best trap, things didn't always go as Chuck planned! Sometimes Chuck would be waiting for the right moment to pull the string...and I would drive up the drive....the doves flew away. Or, Chuck would go to pull the string...and it would get stuck on something I hooked the rope on to keep the rope out of my way. The whole thing was actually pretty funny. They did catch a few doves now and then, but not a big amount at one time.. Then the doves got smart and would only come a few at a time then not at all.

So that left the feeder wide open for anyone to come and eat. The next thing we know we have a squirrel trapped in the bird trap! We caught him or them on two separate occasions, and boy were they mad about being trapped!

Soon after catching the squirrels, we decided to remove the trap! And soon after that, the doves came back! And they continue to eat all my bird food! But, it was a good trap!
